Sauteed Mushroom Recipe with Green Peas
This sauteed mushroom recipe with green peas combines simple ingredients with spices for a quick and easy side dish.
Spices That Go Well with Mushrooms
Some of the best spices that complement the earthy flavor of mushrooms are allspice, cinnamon, sumac, and more. These essential Turkish spices are all included in my Thursday’s Little Secret spice blend. The sweet flavor of the peas in this dish contrast with the rich and earthy nature of the spiced mushrooms for a balanced and delicious final dish. If you like your dishes spicy (hot!), try adding some Turkish red pepper or crushed red pepper flakes as well. Also, some herbs that go with well with mushrooms include thyme, rosemary, tarragon, basil, and more.
The Best Way to Wash Mushrooms
Most mushrooms are sold with quite a bit of dirt still attached to them, so they need to be washed. However, you don’t want the mushrooms to absorb too much water during rinsing, as their gills (on the bottom side of the cap) will soak up the water and make them take longer to cook. Just a quick rinse under cold running water, while focusing on getting the dirt off the top of the cap is the best way. While it may seem tempting to soak mushrooms to get the dirt off, it’s not recommended. Reason being they will soak up a ton of water, and then release all that water during cooking. This makes for a watery final dish that’s not nearly as delicious!
What to Serve with this Sauteed Mushroom Recipe
While making this delicious dish runs the risk of stealing the “show” of dinner (yes, it’s THAT good!), it also is a perfect side dish for many main dishes. Try Lamb Chops with Pistachio Gremolata or Slow Roasted Halibut with Herb Salsa. It can also be served with plain rice or pasta.
Green Peas and Mushrooms
- Dice onion. Mince garlic. Thinly slice mushrooms.
- Heat olive oil in a large saute pan over medium high heat. Add sliced mushrooms and cook, stirring occasionally until browning and soft, about 8-10 minutes. Turn down the heat to medium. Add 2 Tablespoons more olive oil, onions, garlic, salt, spice blend, and pepper. Cook 3-4 more minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Add peas and cook for 8 minutes or until peas are warmed through. Serve with rice, over pasta, or alongside a heartier main dish.
